CEROVAČKE CAVES
Cerovačke Caves are the most significant speleological site, not just for Velebit but also Croatia. Due to its unique natural beauty and numerous finds from the past, Cerovačke caves were founded in 1961. and protected as a “geomorphological monument of nature”. Apart from the large amount of archaeological remains, they are also one of the largest cave bear sites in Croatia.
RIVER ZRMANJA
Zrmanja has paved the way to the sea for millennia through a hard carbonate substrate, creating one of the most impressive canyons in Croatia, therefore it is protected as a significant landscape in her natural beauty. After the last ice age, by raising the sea level by more than 120 meters, today’s lower stream of the Zrmanja River has been converted into an estuary. In this part of the canyon, at the bottom of the riverbed, a continuous layer of seawater is traversed, which makes rich and diverse habitat of plant and animal species – a significant and sensitive ecosystem, an important hatchery of different kinds of fish, which must be preserved for future generations.
